In memoriam LetJen (Purn.) Agus Widjojo (Engl.)

On the evening of February 8, 2026, Indonesia lost one of its finest generals, Agus Widjojo. Aged 78, he passed away at the Gatot Subroto Central Military Hospital (RSPAD) in Jakarta.
His most recent post was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to the Republic of the Philippines, a position he had held since January 2022.
Prior to that, he served as Governor of the Lemhanas (National Resilience Institute) from April 15, 2016, to January 12, 2022. But Agus Widjojo was first and foremost a military man.
Born in Surakarta on June 8, 1947, he graduated from the Indonesian Military Academy in 1970 and left the military with the rank of Lieutenant General (three stars), having held distinguished positions within its ranks.
Agus indeed had a long military and international career. He notably served as an officer with the International Control and Supervision Commission in Vietnam in 1973 and as a member of the Indonesian contingent of the United Nations Emergency Force II (UNEF II) in the Sinai Peninsula, in the Middle East, in 1975. Before his retirement in 2003, Agus held several strategic positions: Commander of the General Staff and the Command School of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (Sesko TNI), Chief of the Territorial Staff to the Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, and Vice-President of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) for the TNI/Polri faction (2001-2003). Alongside his military career, Agus also pursued higher education abroad, notably in the United States (1).
On April 18, 2016, he chaired the steering committee of the "1965 National Symposium" at the Aryaduta Hotel in central Jakarta. According to Agus, acknowledging and resolving the tragedy of 1965 was a crucial step in nation-building and state-building, restoring trust between the Indonesian people and their military. He was also a member of the Truth and Friendship Commission of the Republic of Indonesia and Timor-Leste, tasked with investigating allegations of human rights violations committed by Indonesia in East Timor.
Agus Widjojo can rightly be described as an intellectual military leader, given his significant influence on the reform process of the Indonesian military. Through his reflections and work, Agus actively contributed to the return of the army to its primary function (defense) and to the abandonment of the dual role (Dwifungsi), which had given the army a dominant position within the Indonesian Republic in social, political, and economic spheres since 1965, that is, since Suharto's rise to power. Agus Widjo was a renowned and respected intellectual.
He was a great servant of the Indonesian nation and state. An upright and devoted man, his passing is undoubtedly a great loss for the Republic of Indonesia.
I had the immense honor of knowing Agus Widjo. I first met him in Jakarta in 2006 in the Sarinah district, interviewing him while he was working at UKP3R (Presidential Task Force for Program Management and Reforms) (2), then on two other occasions: in 2018 when I was a guest of Lemhanas (3), of which he was then the Governor, and lastly in 2024, in a less formal setting, with his wife, at the Sari Delicatessen in the Sari Pacific Hotel; he was visiting Jakarta from Manila, where he was serving as Ambassador.
From our first meeting, one was struck by his intelligence and quick wit, reflected in his sharp, piercing gaze. His speech was clear, his remarks precise, and never affected. Very open and approachable, he was always smiling, full of energy, and consistently even-tempered. He possessed a powerful presence that transcended his reserve and simplicity. We will not forget him.
His passing will leave a great void in the Indonesian military and intellectual community. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, assuring them of our heartfelt sympathy.
Farewell, General, may God have mercy on him.
He rests in the Kalibata Heroes' Cemetery in South Jakarta.

Le 8 février 2026, au soir, l’Indonésie perdait un de ses meilleurs généraux en la personne d’Agus Widjojo. Âgé de 78 ans, il s'est éteint à l'hôpital militaire central Gatot Subroto (RSPAD) de Jakarta.
Ses dernières fonctions furent celles d’Ambassadeur extraordinaire et plénipotentiaire de la République d'Indonésie auprès de la République des Philippines, poste qu’il occupait depuis janvier 2022.

Avant cela, il fut Gouverneur du Lemhanas (Institut de Résilience Nationale) entre 15 avril 2016 et le 12 janvier 2022.
Mais Agus Widjojo fut avant tout un militaire. Né à Surakarta le 8 juin 1947, sorti diplômé de l’Académie militaire indonésienne en 1970, il quitta l’institution militaire avec le grade de Lieutenant-Général (trois étoiles), après avoir occupé en son sein d’éminentes fonctions.
Agus a mené en effet une longue carrière militaire et internationale. Il a notamment servi comme officier au sein de la Commission internationale de contrôle et de supervision au Vietnam en 1973 et comme membre du contingent indonésien de la Force d'urgence des Nations Unies II (UNEF II) au Sinaï, au Moyen-Orient, en 1975. Avant sa retraite en 2003, Agus avait occupé plusieurs postes stratégiques : commandant de l’État-major et de l'École de commandement des forces armées nationales indonésiennes (Sesko TNI), chef d' État-major territorial auprès du commandant des forces armées nationales indonésiennes et vice-président de l'Assemblée consultative du peuple (MPR) pour la faction TNI/Polri (2001-2003). Parallèlement à sa carrière militaire, Agus avait également poursuivi des études supérieures à l'étranger, notamment aux États-Unis (1).
Il avait présidé le 18 avril 2016, le comité de pilotage du « Symposium national de 1965 » à l’hôtel Aryaduta (Jakarta centre). Selon Agus, reconnaître et résoudre la tragédie de 1965 était une étape cruciale pour la construction de la nation et de l'État, le retour de la confiance entre le peuple indonésien et son armée. Il avait été également membre de la Commission Vérité et Amitié République d'Indonésie - Timor-Leste, chargée d'enquêter sur les allégations de violations des droits de l'homme commises par l'Indonésie au Timor oriental.
On peut, à juste titre, qualifier Agus Widjojo de militaire intellectuel, tant il a marqué le processus de réforme de l’armée indonésienne. Par ses réflexions et travaux, Agus a participé activement au retour de l’armée dans ses fonctions premières (défense) et à l’abandon de la double fonction (Dwifungsi), celle qui donnait à l’armée une place prépondérante au sein de la république indonésienne, dans le social, le politique et l’économique depuis 1965, c’est-à-dire à compter de la prise de pouvoir de Soeharto.
Agus Widjo était un intellectuel reconnu et respecté. Ce fut un grand serviteur de la nation et de l’État indonésien. Homme intègre et dévoué, son décès est assurément une grande perte pour la République d’Indonésie.

 
J’ai eu l’immense honneur de connaître Agus Widjojo. Je l’ai rencontré pour la première fois à Jakarta en 2006 dans le quartier de Sarinah, l’ayant interviewé alors qu’il travaillait au sein de l’UKP3R (Unité de travail présidentielle pour la gestion des programmes et les réformes) (2), puis à deux autres reprises, en 2018 alors que j’étais invité au Lemhanas (3) dont il était à l’époque le Gouverneur et la dernière fois en 2024, de façon moins formelle, avec son épouse, au Sari Delicatessen du Sari Pacific Hotel ; il était alors de passage à Jakarta, venant de Manille où il était Ambassadeur.

Dès la première rencontre, on était frappé par son intelligence, sa vivacité d’esprit, manifestées par son regard vif et perçant. Sa parole était nette, ses propos précis, sans jamais d’affectation. Très ouvert, d’un abord agréable, il était souriant, plein d’allant et d’une humeur toujours égale. Il avait une présence forte par-delà sa retenue et sa simplicité.
Nous ne l’oublierons pas.
Son décès laissera un grand vide dans l’armée et le milieu intellectuel indonésien.

Il repose au cimetière des héros de Kalibata dans le Sud de Jakarta.
