C’est avec une profonde tristesse que j’ai appris le décès ce jour, 15 mars 2024, du Général indonésien (CR) Makmur Supriyatno.

J’ai eu la chance et l’honneur de le connaître il y a longtemps, vers 2006, c’était à Paris alors qu’il faisait du « benchmarking » peu avant la création de son Université Nationale de la Défense à Jakarta (UnHan), visitant l’IHEDN, le CID (à l’époque ; aujourd’hui École de Guerre), etc.
En avril 2023, je le revoyais (certes en visio) alors que j’étais invité à un Webinaire organisé par son université.
En Octobre 2023, lors d’un voyage dans l’archipel, il vint même me chercher à l’aéroport de Soekarno-Hatta. Ce fut l’occasion de discuter à nouveau, lui et moi.
C’était un ami et nous avions en commun l’amour de la patrie, le goût de l’Histoire, l’intérêt pour le métier des Armes ; nous partagions les mêmes valeurs traditionnelles qui font la grandeur des nations : le sens du sacré, la Foi, la fidélité.

Makmur Supriyatno était un intellectuel brillant ; il fut un des meilleurs artisans du renouveau de l’esprit de défense en Indonésie. Il manquera à ses étudiants, à l’armée indonésienne (la TNI) et – bien sûr et avant tout - à sa famille à laquelle j’adresse ici toutes mes condoléances.
Il est enterré ce jour à Sukabumi (Ouest de Java).
Adieu mon Général, adieu "Pak Nano".

In Memoriam Jenderal (Purn.) Makmur Supriyatno.
It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death today, March 15, 2024, of Indonesian BrigJend (Purnawirawan) Makmur Supriyatno.
I had the chance and the honor of knowing him a long time ago, around 2006, it was in Paris when he was doing benchmarking shortly before the creation of his National Defense University in Jakarta (UnHan), visiting the IHEDN (Institute of advanced national defense studies), the CID (the Joint Defense College at that time; today the "École de Guerre"), etc.
In April 2023, I saw him again (admittedly on video) when I was invited to a Webinar organized by his university.
In October 2023, during a trip to the archipelago, he even came to pick me up at Soekarno-Hatta airport. It was an opportunity to talk again, him and I.
He was a friend and we had in common a love of the homeland, a passion for History, an interest in the profession of Arms; we shared the same traditional values that make nations great: the sense of the sacred, Faith, loyalty.
Makmur Supriyatno was a brilliant intellectual; he was one of the best architects of the renewal of the spirit of defense in Indonesia.
He will be missed by his students, the TNI and – of course and above all – his family to whom I extend my condolences.
He is buried today march 15th in Sukabumi (West Java).
Goodbye Jenderal, goodbye “Pak Nano”.
